Tasting Events @Bottle Apostle

THIS WEEK:

Free tasting with Hilario Ribeiro

Fri 30 Aug / 4:30 – 8pm

Crouch End

Hilairo visits from Clark Foyster, a specialist importer who’s helped put some of our favourite Austrian and Portuguese wines on the shelves. Schloss Gobelsburg, Pittnauer, Anselmo Mendes and Filipa Pato are just a few of the gems they import - not to mention our specially bottled “Bottle Apostle Touriga Franca”!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Champagne

£40 – book online

Wed 4 Sept / 7:30pm (Victoria Park)

Thurs 5 Sept / 7:30pm (Crouch End)

We will taste a range of different styles and price levels, highlighting the different grapes used, differing sweetness levels, winemaking methods, and age. Expect excellent examples from the likes of Billecart-Salmon, Savart, Tarlant, and others. By the end of the session you should have an improved idea of what style of Champagne you like and able to make more informed purchases. We will be serving various suitable food pairings for you to nibble on during the event.

Free tasting with Alastair Llewellyn-Smith

Sat 21 Sept / 12 – 5pm

Crouch End

Not just a one-trick pony! Despite a specialism in French wines, Thorman Hunt supplies some of our most popular Italian drops (among others). Meet the man responsible for putting Fourny & Fils Champagnes, Andre Dezat Sancerres, and Moreau Chablis in your glass. Our house Frassinelli proseccos, brand new Sicilians and renowned Argiano are just a few of the other gems Alastair helps bring in. Stop by to enjoy some of these favourites with us.

Mums of Crouch End

Wed 25 Nov / 2:30pm

Crouch End / £5 – book online

The third of a series of monthly events, bringing together recent parents for an informal, early-afternoon walk round wine tasting in our shop (2.30pm to 4pm). This month we'll be hosting one of our favourite importers, Beatriz, from whom we source various excellent wines from all over the place (you may have met Beatriz at a recent Saturday afternoon shop tasting). Particularly attractive discounts will be offered on the day. Light food will be provided to nibble on, and spittoons will be provided! Buy your ticket either online or in the shop.

Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe with Daniel Brunier

Tues 12 Nov / 8pm

Crouch End / £30 – book online

We’re ecstatic to be able to organise an event featuring the wines of Daniel Brunier, and even more ecstatic to have the man himself present to showcase the wines. We’ll taste through a range of Brunier wines including Le Pigeoulet, second-label Le Telegramme and of course the prestigious wines of Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe. This is a real treat for all you Chateauneuf-du-Pape fans as we’ll be tasting through the white 2011 and some spectacular reds showing some age (1999, 2005, 2008, 2009).

Billecart-Salmon with James Thomas

Wed 20 Nov / 7:30pm

Crouch End / £40 – book online

The Champagnes of Billecart-Salmon have been a great success at Bottle Apostle, so we’re very pleased to welcome James Thomas from Billecart-Salmon who will guide us through a stunning range of wines. We'll taste just about everything in the UK at the moment, including the Brut Reserve, Extra Brut and Demi-Sec, the stunning Rose, the 1999 Cuvee Nicolas Francois, and perhaps a bonus from library stock. Light food will also be served. Attractive discounts will be offered on the night.

Something Fishy

Some of our most successful events are our “Something Fishy” evenings, held with John and Brendan from Jonathan Norris Fishmongers on the other side of the roundabout from us. The boys are as keen about their product as we are, and really good cooks as well.

Each evening features 4 sea creatures (perhaps shellfish / squid / flatfish / round fish): one of the boys demos how to prepare said creature – gutting / filleting / shucking etc – whilst the other beavers away in the kitchen. Once the demo is over a simply cooked but tasty dish appears. This week’s mouthwatering menu was

  • Scallops with smoked Toulouse Sausage
  • Griddled squid with sesame oil, chilli, coriander and lime
  • Plaice fillet in Japanese Panko breadcrumbs
  • Whole baked wild salmon with samphire

It tasted as good as it sounds. Previously we served 2 wines pre course. However we noticed that several of the wines were well suited to more than one dish. So this time we offered a list of 8 wines, gave our suggestions of course, but allowed people to select a pour as they wish. The wines were as follows (best matches in brackets though most were good allrounders):

  • Champagne Gallimard Brut Reserve NV (£23.50)
  • Txakoli Getaria 2009 Ametzoi (£11.50, squid)
  • Gruener Veltliner Gmoerk 2009 Anton Bauer (£14.50)
  • Venezia Giulia Bianco “Blanc des Rosis” 2007 (£19.00, scallops & sausage)
  • Chassagne-Montrachet 2007 Fontaine-Gagnard (£35.00, plaice)
  • Provence Rose “Pink Floyd” 2009 Ch. Miraval (£14.00)
  • Morgon Cotes de Py Vieilles Vignes 2005 Stephane Aviron (£17.00, salmon)
  • Maranges 1er Cru La Fussiere 2007 Bruno Colin (£22.00)

The Txacoli is a light, spritzy, tangy Basque white. It’s a staple of these evenings and is really flexible, though the Toulouse sausage was a step too far – the rich North Italian Blanc de Rosis, a blend of Fruiliano, Pinot Grigio and several other varieties was best here and also very good with the salmon (it works well with meatier white fish too). The Chassagne was a decadent but successful match with the relatively humble breadcrumbed plaice (though this was as good as you’ll ever taste). We are very keen on lighter reds with meaty white fish, salmon and trout. The Morgon (a beautiful fruity but mellow top-end Beaujolais just hitting its stride at 5 years old was a very good match in my opinion though there were a few dissenters in the group – it can take a while to get your head around reds with fish! The tangy fresh Maranges (red Burgundy Pinot from a less well-known village) was also well-liked.

The next “Something Fishy”  is to be held on Wednesday 20th of October, 7.30pm to c. 10.30pm. The menu will feature (subject to availability) crayfish, mussels, sardines or mackerel and, finishing on a real high note, turbot. Our final event for 2010 will be on Tuesday November 16th; the line-up is yet to be decided.  Tickets are £60 per person. Call us on 020 8985 1549 to book tickets.
